This lovely light amethyst cabochon is surrounded by the 18k gold bezel setting and 18k gold granulation with a notched granulated bail. This classically inspired medallion looks like it could have come from buried pirate treasure, a shipwreck, or stolen from a museum!

Granulation is an ancient fusing process utilized for thousands of years by the Etruscans and Mycenaeans. I alloy pure 24k gold down to 18k and create tiny granules of various sizes and sheet. I place these granules with a 000 paint brush and then carefully heat them using a mouth torch to the point of fusing. Each sphere is connected by just a tangent of metal creating a sleek and beautiful surface. Check out my social media links for videos both long and short, and narrated and not, that show this whole process from start to finish!

Once the granules are fused I finish by bringing the granulated surface to a high polish and back down with a brass brush finish to show off the unique quality of the 18k granulated gold. The amethyst is bezel-set in 18k gold with a hammer and handmade setting tool under the assistance of a microscope.
